Astronomers have officially unmasked 44 Nysa as the first known “trilobate” structure in our solar system. According to a Lowell Observatory announcement on July 29, 2026, this isn’t your average space potato. Instead, Nysa is made of three distinct rock blobs fused together by two narrow necks—the frozen aftermath of a gentle, slow-motion cosmic pileup billions of years ago.
The team also confirmed Nysa has a brand-new mini-moon orbiting it. Dubbed S/2026, this 1-kilometre-wide rock was spotted tagging along for the ride.
