China’s artificial sun project has achieved a major engineering milestone with the successful testing of a 582-tonne, D-shaped superconducting magnet system operating at 6.5 Tesla, marking the largest such fusion magnets ever constructed. These magnets, measuring 21 by 12 meters, are a critical component of the experimental reactor designed to confine plasma at temperatures hotter than the Sun’s core without physical contact, bringing the country closer to realizing nuclear fusion as a clean energy source. While commercial electricity generation from fusion remains distant, this breakthrough represents a significant step forward in the global effort to replicate the Sun’s energy process on Earth.
